The weather may be frightful, but the Bears are worse

How 'bout them Bears? I think this pretty accurately sums up our feelings: when the score was 33-0, little M spit up all over her Bears jersey. Eric agreed that he would like to puke all over his shirt, too. From the mouths of babes...literally.

M is doing great. She loves the Christmas decorations - especially the lights on the tree and the people on the nativity. She also has decided she (finally) likes her playmat and her swing. She's happy most of the time, but when she's sad/mad, she's really sad/mad. It reminds me of the nursery rhyme about the girl who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead...

In other news, Peanut had surgery on Friday and is slowly on the road to recovery. Last night was rough as he cried in his sleep all night. Actually, M got the best sleep of any of us (9:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. without a peep from her...which would have been great had we not been up with the dog!) Peanut was feeling better today and was trying to run around the house, and he managed to pop one of his stitches in the process. So back to the vet we go tomorrow.

2 month check-up

I'm guessing I'll be lucky to get a short paragraph or two, but hey, an update is an update. (Little M had the first half of her 2 month shots this morning, so she's been really fussy all day). The rest of her appointment went really well. She's grown a LOT in the last two months - she's just over 9.5 pounds (25%) and 21 inches long (10%). Definitely up from the 5% weight and 3% length at the last appointment!

We also celebrated M's baptism over the weekend, and we were glad that her godparents, grandparents and even two great-grandparents were able to attend.

Annnnnnd...time is up!

So much to be thankful for

Well, someone commented on how long it had been since our blog had been updated, so I guess that means I owe you an update. Consider this a special edition since it's not Sunday ;-)

Today, we celebrated a wonderful Thanksgiving with both sets of our parents and Kim's brother. It was so nice to have all 8 of us in one place and to enjoy good company, food and football. (Well, okay, I'm not sure the Lions or Cowboys count as "good" football, but I digress.) We have so much to be thankful for - this year especially with the addition of little M - and it was very special to celebrate with both sides of the family.

M was a great sport today as we passed her from person to person and took literally hundreds of photos. (Stay tuned to your inbox and/or Facebook for pictures). She even made me look bad by taking a nice long nap on Grandma and Grandpa's couch...so no one believes me that she never naps. Figures. She was a big cranky (overwhelmed?) by the end of the evening, so now we're relaxing at home and watching football (J-E-T-S, JETS JETS JETS) before bed.

Just in the past week, she's started smiling intentionally. Your heart just melts when she looks into your eyes and gives you a huge, gummy smile. She's also gotten much better head/neck control, and she can lift her head up and look both ways. She's still fascinated by lights - especially the skylight at Kim's parents'. She also makes coo'ing noises and still likes wiggling on the floor.

We'll try to post another update soon!

A quick update

The little one is asleep, which probably means I have about 3.5 minutes to write a quick update. Things are going good for us, and we're even getting a little more sleep. M slept for a 4 hour stretch last night! She still just cat naps during the day, which makes it hard to get anything done around the house, but oh well.

It's hard to believe she's a month old already. Fun things she does: picks up her head (though not for long), holds on to your finger, makes coo-ing sounds and wiggles (a lot!). She seems to like reading stories, singing songs and dancing with us.

She also seemed to enjoy her first Halloween. Or at least, we enjoyed dressing her up and showing her off ;)

She's also definitely getting bigger - she's close to outgrowing her newborn clothes. We tried a 0-3 outfit on her yesterday, and while it's definitely big in the waist and a little long, it's not overwhelmingly huge. I imagine she'll be in them full-time by the middle of this month. (Which is why I ran a huge load of 0-3 clothes through the wash today.)

As for us...we're about the same. Eric's back in the swing of things at work (which means he's really busy), and we definitely look forward to the weekends. On Sunday, Eric and his friend Tony started to fix the drywall in the garage, and they got everything taped and mudded. Now they just need to sand, paint and reattach the molding. We also discovered some rot in the door, so that'll need to be replaced eventually.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

Well, I guess we spoke too soon in our last post as little M decided to make her appearance shortly after we last posted! We were surprised to meet her so soon - but also very excited.

After losing a lot of weight in the hospital, M is almost back up to her birth weight. The doctor was very pleased with her weight gain last week. We have another appointment tomorrow, so we'll see how close we are!

We're running short on sleep (and our caffeine intake has increased exponentially...thank you Coke for being so delicious), but we're otherwise doing great. M is a wiggle worm (no surprise there!), and she loves to be held. Which is great except between 1 and 5 a.m. But when she looks up at you with those big beautiful eyes and makes one of her many cute faces, your heart just melts.

Two week check-up:
Weight: 6 lb 4 oz (5%)
Height: 18 in (3%)
Head: 5%

Fall is here

Most of this week was fairly uneventful. In fact, I think the most notable thing to share was how amazingly HOT it was for late September. (Though I'm guessing I noticed it more than others thanks to the extra weight I'm toting around.)

We've had gorgeous fall weather this weekend, though, and the a/c is officially turned off. (Which is probably a sure sign it will be sweltering again next week). It's been really nice to just have our windows and back door open. Okay, and we'll admit, and the apple cider donuts have been really nice too.

Yesterday, we cleaned the house (well, a little), sterilized bottles and pacifiers, and Eric worked on reformating computers. Today we ran errands, visited with my parents and watched football.

Baby is now considered "full term," so in theory she could arrive any day. (Though hopefully she'll wait at least one or two more weeks, if not the full three!) Guess we'll just have to wait and see which day she has in mind for a birthday! The average baby weighs a little over 6 pounds and measures about 19 inches at this point, though this one is probably smaller than that (think 5.5 pounds).

Two weeks for the price of one

Apparently I skipped a post last week - oops. So to catch you up, the week before last was the week of the baby shower. My coworkers threw a shower for me on Wednesday afternoon, and it was wonderful! We had a taco bar for dinner (yum!), and there were lots of wonderful gifts.

Then on Saturday, my college friends hosted a shower for me. While it was a small group, it was also a really fun one - and I enjoyed getting to have a chance to chat with friends I haven't seen in awhile. Barbi is also a champ and made it to the shower just 13 days after having a baby. I don't forsee me being that brave!

Since Eric was out of town for Ty's birthday party, I had the whole weekend to organize gifts and finish setting up the room. I even washed sheets and the changing pad cover, so the room looks complete. I think all we need now is the baby! (I say that now...I'm sure there will be at least one midnight run to the store in our future).

This week was much less exciting...and was full of long days at work. It's not a good sign when you're ready for the weekend and it's only Tuesday! We took it easy this weekend - got the car seat bases installed in both cars, ran errands and watched a lot of football (go Bears!).

Baby is probably more than 18.5 inches long and is packing on the pounds — at the rate of about an ounce a day. The average weight at this stage is 6 pounds, but the doctor guessed this little one was closer to 5 pounds at my appointment. (Don't worry - she's growing right on track...I'm just probably not going to have a moose-sized baby). She's shedding most of the hair that covered her body, as well as the waxy substance that kept her from turning into a prune during her 9-month spa experience. She'll be full term at the end of this week...and could technically arrive at any time (eek!).

35 weeks

35/35 today (35 weeks, with 35 days to go)...can't believe how quickly it's going. Baby has less room to maneuver now that she's over 18 inches long and tips the scales at 5 1/4 pounds (like a honeydew melon). Because she's so snug, she's not doing somersaults anymore, but she still manages to roll over (which makes the right side of my belly stick up higher than my left), elbow my side and kick me in the ribs. Her kidneys are fully developed now, and her liver can process some waste products. Most of the basic physical development is now complete — she'll spend the next few weeks putting on weight.

We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo

After a miserably hot week, the weather cooled off just in time for a beautiful three-day weekend. (Thank goodness!).

On Saturday, we took Peanut to the dog park, and he had the best time. At one point, a boxer (his favorite) came in, and Peanut's eyes lit up like it was Christmas morning - it was too funny. There were probably 20 dogs running around, and he was exhausted after playing for an hour.

Yesterday afternoon we went and had some professional pictures taken. We trampled through poison ivy (though we're still rash free tonight, so we're assuming we're in the clear), lay down in weeds and hiked to an old wooden barn. It may be awhile before we get pictures to share, but we're hoping it was worth it (the photographer was really excited, which is always a good sign!).

As an added bonus from the dog park, Peanut slept in until after 8 a.m. today (yay!). We then headed to the zoo. Seems like everyone else had the same idea as the place was packed...but we had a good time looking at the animals (especially the dolphin show and the penguins!).

Baby now weighs about 4 3/4 pounds (like your average cantaloupe) and is almost 18 inches long. Her fat layers — which will help regulate her body temperature once she's born — are filling her out, making her rounder. Her central nervous system is maturing and her lungs are continuing to mature as well. Her favorite game is kicking my ribs...which usually elicits a yelp from me! Hard to believe, but we only have 6 weeks to go!

Are you ready for some football?

Woo! Football season is upon us. Tonight's the draft for our family team, and we're looking forward to pizza and drafting. (Eric's probably looking forward to a beer, too. As for me...well, you can only get so excited about an O'Douls.)

We got the pack n' play and the stroller put together today, so those are big jobs out of the way. I also decided on a shirt and shoes for the maternity photos we're doing next weekend...now I just need to find jewelry!

The weather was nice here all week (low 80s), so we were able to get a walk in most nights. This week is supposed to be hot (90s), but it looks like it may start to cool off for good after that (upper 70s starting Friday - hooray!).

Woah - a pineapple!? This week, baby weighs a little over 4 pounds (heft a pineapple) and has passed the 17-inch mark. She still is a wiggle worm. Eric got to feel her move a lot yesterday and couldn't believe that she does that pretty much all day long. Hopefully my ribs and organs forgive me :) As far as appearances go, she's losing the wrinkly, alien look as she accumulates fat - and her bones (except for in her head) are hardening.

Jic-a-what?

Not sure that we have much interesting to share, yet again this week. Eric had his first appointment with the miracle worker/physical therapist, and he's already feeling better after just one appointment. Definitely a good sign!

We spent Saturday at a baby care class, and are now fully equipped (ha) to dress, bathe, feed, diaper and soothe our little one.

leftShe weighs as much as a jicama this week: about 3.75 pounds. (Not familiar with the jicama? Tune into the Food Network!). She's also about 16.7 inches long, but she still finds room (somehow) to be a wiggle worm. She now has toenails, fingernails, and theoretically real hair (however, I'm doubting this since I've had no heart burn...knock on wood).

Summer showers

This past weekend, we were able to celebrate the upcoming arrival of Lily. Friends and family were nice enough to host a beautiful baby shower, complete with a decadent dessert bar (yum!). We ended up with some wonderful gifts, and we appreciate everyone's thoughtfulness!

Yep, that's right - baby weighs as much as four naval oranges (about 3.3 pounds!). She's also over 16 inches long and is headed for a growth spurt (my poor stomach....). She can turn her head from side to side, and she's beginning to "plump out" as needed fat accumulates underneath her skin.

Truckin' along

Honestly, I have no idea what we did this week, which probably means that nothing exciting happened.

On Saturday morning, we took Peanut to the dog park (since it was relatively cool...or at least, not oppressively hot and humid), and he had a great time playing with all the dogs. As per usual, his favorites were the Saint Bernard, huskies, shelties and German Shepherds. He got enough exercise that he napped all day Saturday - and was still tired on Sunday. Score!

Wow - 75% of the way there. Time seems like it's flying. Believe it or not (I can't), baby is almost 16 inches long and weighs 3 pounds. Her eyesight continues to develop, though it's not very keen; even after she's born, she'll keep her eyes closed for a good part of the day. When she does open them, she'll respond to changes in light but will have 20/400 vision. I now get to see my doctor every two weeks, so I guess that makes me a regular!

Nursery

Okay, okay, this is a late post. Hopefully you weren't waiting around and clicking refresh nonstop for the last three days.

Let's see. This weekend we spent a lot of time working in the baby's room - and Eric worked on his "secret" art project for the wall above the changing table. He made a kite (the fabric has brightly colored butterflies on it), complete with a long tail. We also hung two floating shelves to hold picture frames and whatnot. The room is definitely coming together!

Baby weighs about 2.5 pounds this week and is 15 inches long. (How she can possibly fit in my stomach, I have no idea). Her muscles and lungs are continuing to mature, and her head is growing bigger to make room for her developing brain. The brain is changing from a smooth texture to having the "wrinkles" we usually think of. I had my glucose test this week, and I'm assuming I passed since no one called to tell me otherwise. Bring on the ice cream!

Hot, hot, hot

The post title pretty sums up this week - HOT. Fortunately, the temps finally dipped back into the 80s today and look like they should stay there this week. Hopefully that makes it a lot more comfortable!

On Friday night, we went to a going away party for one of Kim's coworkers. While it was sad to say goodbye, we had a really good time hanging out with friends and relaxing.

Saturday, we got the news that our crib was in, so we immediately went to pick it up and put it together. The room looks (and FEELS!) a lot different now, which is exciting. Eric has also started a "secret" art project for the other wall in the room, so there will be something made by both of us. Later that night, we also met up with friends for a late dinner.

Today was full of errands, laundry and mowing the lawn. But we felt really productive, so that's good.

Baby weighs 2.25 pounds and is 15 inches long. She can blink her eyes and distinguish light. Her brain is also developing wrinkles/grooves. She is still a huge wiggle worm, and her favorite target seems to be my ribs!

Back to reality

Well, the first week back after vacation is never fun - catching up on everything you missed while you were out and getting used to working 8 hours every day.

On Friday, we went out to dinner to celebrate the end of the week. Then on Saturday, we headed north to a BBQ at a friend's house. It was a great time with good food, lots of laughs and a cornhole tournament. We lost in the second round, but we lost to the overall champs, so I guess that's some consolation! On Sunday, we ran errands and then Eric had a soccer game. They played without any subs, so he was beyond exhausted by the time he got home!

Third trimester! Baby is 2 pounds and 15 inches long. She's sleeping and waking at regular intervals, and she opened her eyes for the first time. Her brain is very active, and while her lungs are still very immature, they'd' be capable of functioning if they had to. (Hopefully she stays cooking for several more weeks though!)

Life at the lake

Although the weather didn't cooperate (incredibly humid, overcast and rainy), we still managed to enjoy our week at the lake. Particularly amusing times included Mom shutting the door in Kim's face as we were leaving the condo (and almost locking her inside) and Eric asking if the local ice cream place took reservations (in fairness, he thought he dialed the restaurant we were going to for dinner). Rather than ramble on about the week, here's a look in pictures.

Baby weighs about 1.75 pounds this week and is 14 inches long. She's inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid, which is essential for the development of her lungs. She also continues to be a wiggle worm :)

Heat wave

Not sure who ordered the heat wave, but it's been hot, hot, hot. Aside from the heat, we had a good week. On Tuesday, Kim and her mom went to see Phantom. The performers had amazing voices, and it was great to see on stage.

On Saturday, we woke up early to beat the heat and squeezed in a walk before it got unbearable. Then we put a base coat of paint on the artwork for the baby's room. Then we ran errands and found some awesome sales, and we met Kim's family and her grandparents for dinner.

Today it was too hot to do anything (the low was 80...and that was at about 7 a.m.), but we did finish the artwork for the baby's room. Well, at least we finished this first project...there are sure to be more!

Baby put on 4 ounces this week and weighs about 1.25 pounds now. She doesn't have much fat on her yet, but now that her proportions are about right, she'll start filling out soon. Her lungs are continuing to develop, as her her taste buds (though clearly she's a fan of pizza). Eric was also able to feel her move this week - very exciting!

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there! We spent our Father's Day recuperating from Saturday (more to come on that), running a few errands and grilling out with Kim's family. Eric also had a soccer game today, and he had a shot on goal that just missed. Maybe next week!

As for our busy Saturday, we attended a family reunion with Kim's side of the family. It was the first time all of us (grandparents, kids, grandkids, great-grandkids) had been together for 10 years. It was a long day, but it was nice to be able to see everyone.

We also got supplies to make art work for the baby's room. Kim's dad trimmed everything to size for us today, so now it's just a matter of putting it together. (We'll see how long that takes!)

Good news - apparently any noises baby hears now will seem "normal" to her when she's born, so theoretically, all the barking that Peanut is doing now won't startle her later. Guess we'll keep our fingers crossed on that one. Blood vessels in her little lungs are also developing to prepare her for breathing.

We are *clap clap* UD *clap clap*

The excitement for this week was definitely our reunion. It's hard to believe how quickly the years have gone by! On Friday night, we attended our class party which was outside under a tent (and amazingly hot). Fortunately, the company was great, as around 250 of our classmates were back in town. It was fun to see people - some of whom we haven't seen in years - and reconnect with everyone.

Saturday night was the all-class party, so we had alumni from 1945 to 2010 in one place. Thre was a live band, lots of great food and drink and plenty of people to talk to! It was also less humid than Friday night, which made it much more bearable. We also got a kick out of watching people who don't know how to use a port-a-potty. (Green means it's empty and red means it's occupied; you don't have to pull on every door handle to find an empty one. And no, they do not flush; it's not broken.)

We spent most of today sleeping and recovering from a busy weekend. But we also started moving furniture in the nursery...but can't do much more rearranging until the new furniture gets here. It's coming along though, so that's a good thing!

(Yes, the picture is from a different site this week. The other site started doing a food a month instead of a food a week.) Anyway, this week is a spaghetti squash...which means baby weighs in at about a pound and is 11 inches long. Her lips, eyelids and eyebrows are more distinct, and she has tiny teeth formed below her gums. She's also developing a sleep cycle - sleeping 12-14 hours a day. Though she was definitely awake after I had a root beer float tonight. And who can blame her!

Monday, June 7, 2010

Strawberry-licoius

It was Strawberry Festival weekend! And this year, we were lucky enough to share our favorite festival with Matt, Melissa, Dave and Addison! It was great to see everybody and spend some time hanging out. I have pics of the festival, and one day I may even get around to uploading them :)

Sunday was our friends' son's fourth birthday. (So hard to believe he's four already!), so we spent the afternoon helping him celebrate.

Baby now weighs about three-quarters of a pound and is approximately 10 1/2 inches long. While she's very quiet some days, she's a complete wiggle worm on others (like today!). She also has developed eyebrows and eyelids...wonder what color eyes they're hiding!

Sunday, May 30, 2010

Relaxing

We're so grateful to have the long weekend to rest and recuperate from all the craziness this month. (And of course, we're also grateful for the real reason for this holiday - and thankful for all the men and women who have served/are serving our country.)

We've enjoyed going on walks each evening this week - once the temperature has dropped! It's actually been quite pleasant around 8 p.m., which is perfect to get a 3 mile walk in before the sun goes down.

We've also been busy around the house and running various other errands. We ordered a rocker/recliner and a changing table:

And with any luck, we'll know whether we're accenting the room with pink or blue this upcoming week. Exciting! (Though of course, we need to finish cleaning that room out first...)

Baby weighs about 10 ounces and is about 6 inches long (head to rump) - next week we'll start measuring head to toes! Baby is also a little rock star and likes to move around off and on throughout the day...it feels like someone is playing bass inside my stomach!

Sunday, May 23, 2010

Shopping

After a rainy, wet week (2+ inches), it was a beautiful (and hot!) weekend.

Yesterday we cleaned the house and got another load ready for Goodwill - hopefully this is the last batch! The closets are cleaned out, and now we just need to organize, organize, organize.

Today Eric worked on adding a new flower bed in the backyard. He got half way done before it got too hot to do anything else - hopefully we can finish up later this week. Then we made a trek to a locally-owned furniture store and found a crib! It met all of our criteria, was convertible, was in a color we liked and was on sale - sold! Now we just have to wait eons for it to come in - good thing we don't need it for awhile!

Tonight, we went over to our friends for a cookout, and we enjoyed playing cornhole, grilling out and just relaxing. Once the sun went down, it was a really nice evening!

Baby is 6 inches long (maybe the picture should be a Subway sandwich?) and weighs a little over half a pound (though I've definitely put on more than that!). Baby's also covered in a waxy substance that will keep it from turning into a prune for the remainder of this 9 month bath, and the brain is designating specialized areas for smell, taste, hearing, vision and touch.

Sunday, May 16, 2010

Exhaustion

Wow - what a busy weekend. We spent all day Saturday in the yard (mowing lawn, edging lawn, digging small new flower bed, putting down 2 yards of mulch)...and then went to see the Reds game with Kim's parents. The game was a lot of fun (especially since we were in the free food seats), and there were lots of famous people on hand in honor of the Civil Rights Game. Very cool.

Today we spent all day running errands and cleaning. We found some good buys at the outlet, and we got more stuff cleaned out of the closets at home. Laundry is also done, so I guess you can say it was a pretty productive weekend!

A bunch of new photos are also loaded - sorry for the delay. I've been exhausted lately and didn't have the energy at night to upload them.

Baby is 5.5 inches long and is spending the time passing the hours yawning, hiccuping, rolling, twisting, kicking, punching, sucking and swallowing...but I haven't felt anything yet. We've started researching baby gear but haven't purchased anything yet (well, okay, except for a cute onsie or three.)

365 Project | Day 136

Two yards of mulch later (well, okay, 1.75 yards of mulch...there's still some on the driveway), we're done with the flower beds!

Graduation and Mother's Day

On Friday, we headed to Butler for Matt's graduation. The drive there was awful (accident, construction, heavy truck traffic and a bad thunderstorm), but we made it. The graduation ceremony itself was nice - but long. And we enjoyed celebrating with Matt and Morgan after their diplomas were securely in hand. Congrats, guys!

Today, we had Kim's family over for a Mother's Day lunch. We grilled steaks and hung around for the afternoon.

We also made a trip to Lowes to browse the toilet selection (exciting, yes?). The guest bath is in need of a new throne, thanks to a small defect its had since we moved in. Homeownership is so fun.

Baby is five inches long and weighs about 5 ounces, and the skeleton is changing from soft cartilage to bone. Baby is also really thoughtful and got me a card and gift for Mother's Day!

Rain, rain

Well, the weekend was a bust. Or at least our original plans for the weekend (mulching), thanks to the nearly non-stop rain and thunderstorms. But, we did end up getting a bunch of errands run, made more progress on cleaning the office and got a new bookshelf for the office closet. We also tested out recliners at La-Z-Boy, but we aren't sold on anything (yet).

Baby is the size of an avocado this week (4.5 inches and 3.5 ounces). I happened to pick one up at the grocery store and wow... Tiny bones forming in the ears, so baby can pick up my voice (and groan when I sing). Eyebrows, lashes and hair are starting to fill in, and taste buds are forming.

365 Project | Day 124

Our hastas seriously look like jungle plants.
