Memorial Day weekend catch-up (not ketchup!)

Wow - it's the end of May already. How did that happen? We're not sure we're ready for June - although, we are enjoying the fact that the weather is (mostly) consistently nice!

This has been an incredibly eventful week for us, which means our blog should be much less boring than last week's! Tuesday was Kim's dad's retirement ceremony. Kim took the whole day off work to finish getting the house cleaned up for the party at our house that night. We had planned to have the party in the backyard, but of course the forecast was predicting rain. So we ended up sweeping out the garage and setting up folding tables/chairs out there instead. Eric came home at lunch time to change into his nice clothes and we headed up to the rendezvous point. Yes, rendezvous point. Kim's mom was going to call us as the caravan was driving by so we could jump in the processing of cars. This of course sounds like a much better idea in theory than in practice. We had to turn on to the main road before we wanted to since there was a long line of cars behind us. No problem - we just pulled into the next parking lot and turned around to go again. But this time, we ended up with a green light while the caravan was stuck at the red light. Ugh. So we ended up pulling over on the side of the road until the caravan went by...and jumped on at the end.

The ceremony was very nice - though Kim was upset no one told her she'd need to wear waterproof mascara! After the ceremony, there was an ice cream social at the ceremony site, and then we booked it back to our house to wait for the caterer to arrive. Not long after the food was delivered, friends and family started to arrive for the party. It was great to see so many people come to celebrate the retirement festivities, and the party went to nearly 11 p.m. (Boy were we tired at work the next day!)

Flash forward to this weekend. Kim and our friend Danielle braved the crowds (and outrageous gas prices) to go to I.K.E.A. on Saturday. While they were gone, Eric mowed the lawn and took Peanut to the bark park. While Peanut still loved playing with all the dogs, it seemed like he was a little less energetic this time -- he couldn't keep up with a greyhound. Maybe he's growing up/calming down some! On Sunday, Eric's sister Melissa came to stay with us for the night. We hadn't seen her since Christmas, so it was great to catch up and spend some time together. We grilled out and watched a movie. Today, we had hoped to finish our cornhole set, but Eric's Craftsman saw broke (the spring that latches on to the blade guard snapped). We ran to Sears thinking they'd replace it, but noooo. Guess the boards will have to wait for another weekend!

And now for a new blog feature: the cost per gallon of regular unleaded gas. Today it was $3.99.

Busy yet boring

Well, we're clearly a day late this week. It's been pretty hectic here - yet not much exciting to report on...

On Tuesday, we went out to dinner with our friend D to celebrate her graduation from law school. Then Kim's family arrived in town on Thursday in preparation of her dad's retirement festivities. We spent the weekend with them, attending a BBQ, and cleaning the house. Peanut really enjoyed having company in this house, mostly because he figured out he could woof and get a treat out of anyone. Whether his stomach finally got full or he gave in to exhaustion, he ended up sleeping most of Sunday afternoon!

We have another busy week ahead of us...but hopefully we'll have a more interesting blog next week.

Landscaping R Us

Happy Mother's Day! Unfortunately, it was a cold and rainy one here. So much for our plans to finish mulching the flower beds!

Most of our week involved some form of landscaping. As you may recall from last week's blog, we had installed 30 edging bricks around the garden. Well, two more trips to the hardware store, two bags of sand, and several days later, we finished getting all the edging in! There are a grand total of 92 bricks around the front of the house now...and we think it looks pretty darn good! One day earlier this week (Monday?) we came home to find that our new trees and been delivered and planted. It's amazing how much they add to the yard. Now we're just hoping they survive!

Keeping with the yard work theme, we also put down 21 cubic feet of mulch on Saturday morning. Of course, that was only enough for about half of the beds, so you can guess what we'll be doing later this week.

If that wasn't enough to keep us busy on Saturday, we also had to clean the house and get ready for our BBQ that night. We invited Kim's office to grill out, and about 10 others came over to eat, chat, and play corn hole and ladder golf. Peanut was mostly well-behaved during the cookout...not that we can blame him for wanting some of our tasty food!

And as for our non-house related activities this week, we had tickets to see comedian Eddie Izzard on Friday night. We definitely enjoyed the show and have been incorporating some of his one-liners into our conversation all weekend. ("You may remember Charles Darwin for writing the book MonkeyMonkeyMonkeyMonkeyMonkeyYou"). But maybe you had to be there!

Our menagerie

Well, given the zoo we've had in our neighborhood this week, you'd probably think we lived out on a farm. A few weeks ago, we saw a group of four deer running into the woods close to our house, and we were surprised since we hadn't seen any deer since we moved in. A few days later, we saw a pair of the deer walking in the football field. Shortly after returning from vacation, we saw one deer (a buck, whom Eric has named "Duke") at the far end of our neighborhood. Fast forward to yesterday afternoon, when we looked up from lunch and saw Duke in the back yard! He's incredibly tame, and won't run away even if you walk up to him. In fact, several neighborhood kids have been petting him (much to Kim's chagrin).

And the rest of the zoo, you ask? Well we had friends over for a cookout yesterday. Of course, it was pouring down rain when everyone showed up, and Eric got to grill out in the drizzle. Fortunately, the rain stopped and the sun came out, so we decided to take Evan (who's almost 2) to the park to play. On our walk there, we ran into a family of geese with seven little goslings. Too cute.

Kim's parents returned from their vacation after dinner last night, and spent the night before heading back home today. We spent the rest of our day doing things around the house. We started by touching up the paint on the shutters and back door, and then we decided to put some edging around our flower beds. As it turns out, we'll need somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 bricks (ugh). Eric went and got the first load of 40 bricks, and we managed to get 30 of them installed before we couldn't stand the thought of digging anymore. Granted, we only started this project at 3 p.m., so I'd say we made pretty good progress! With any luck, we'll have the rest of them installed by next Saturday so we can mulch on Sunday. Keep your fingers crossed.
