A hot few days

Well, the title of the post says it all. When we returned home last Sunday night, we discovered our air conditioning had died. Just what you want to happen right before a week of 90 degree weather. Eric inspected the unit and found that the motor and fan were working just fine...but for some reason it just wasn't pumping any air into the house. After taking off more paneling, he found that there was a huge block of ice around the compressor. Great.

We were fairly confident that the entire unit was going to have to go the big HVAC shop in the sky -- just because that's how things usually go with our house. In fact, we've been discussing replacing the water heater and air conditioning/furnace soon just to ward off a situation like this where it dies on us and we can't get it fixed/a new one installed quickly enough.

At any rate, we talked to several people to get quotes on new units, and one of them came out to the house to look at the current system. Turns out some of the problem has to do with how the original contractor installed the unit. The PVC pipe was installed so the water has to flow against gravity (apparently the contractor slept through physics class), so the water was dripping back into the system, hitting the cold air and freezing -- thus the big block of ice. We got the water drained out of the pipe, so we have air in the house again...but there is still a leak somewhere in the system, which is why it's not as cold as it could be. We haven't yet decided whether we're going to fix or replace the unit, but at least we have a little more time to figure it out now!

Friday night we went to a BBQ at Mike and Erin's house. We had a great time, and we had a chance to play tennis, bowling and Mario Kart on their Wii. Uh oh...I think we're hooked! We also got to see baby Leah for a few minutes between her catnaps. She's growing up so quickly!

On Saturday, Kim went shopping at the outlets and was able to find a dress for a wedding we're going to next month. While she was gone, Eric worked on fixing his parent's computer (it's a work in progress). Then we headed over to Mike and Katie's house for a pool party. We ended up in and out of the pool a lot due to scattered thunderstoms, but it was a lot of fun and a great way to cook off on a hot day. Today, we've just been lounging around the house and enjoying the sunny day!

Current gas price: $4.09/gallon.
