Oh, Mexico

We'll, it's been a busy two weeks since we last wrote! We apologize in advance for a lengthy post - hopefully you won't fall asleep while reading it :)

Last Thursday, we woke up looong before the sun rose (3:25 a.m., to be exact) to make our way to the airport. Then we played the hurry up and wait game as we waited to get on the plane, waited during a long layover and waited to go through the customs line in Cancun. The flight into Cancun was pretty bumpy, so we were glad when we finally landed. We were able to eventually find our bus after using our oh-so-excellent Spanish skills to ask a police officer where that particular travel company was located. After a 90 minute bus ride, we finally made it to the resort - 12 hours after we'd started! Needless to say, we were pretty tired (and hungry!) so we ordered room service and took a nap. For dinner, we tried the buffet restaurant.

On Friday, we woke up rested and ready to start on our tans. Because we didn't want to get burned (and be miserable) on the first day there, we lathered up in sunscreen and headed to the pool with our books. Kim felt a little hot after two hours in the sun, so she moved to the shade of a tiki hut. Eric said he wanted to keep working on his tan, so he stayed put. And, you guessed it...when we went inside he discovered he was bright red. He was so miserable he ended up staying in the room all day Saturday while Kim relaxed along the beach. We had dinner at the Mexican restaurant on Friday (as delicious and authentic as you can get!) and at the Greek restaurant on Saturday.

Sunday, took a guided tour to Tulum, an ancient Mayan civilization. You have to walk through a dense jungle to get to the ruins, so it was oppressively hot and humid. We were so glad to reach the top of a hill where the jungle gave way to a stony cliff that overlooked the ocean. The view was gorgeous, and the breeze that came off the water was amazing. We toured around the ruins for awhile while learning about Mayan culture - and why the Spaniards thought the city was made of gold. For dinner, we went to the Italian restaurant, and that night, we celebrated an early anniversary with a treat from the staff.

On Monday, we decided to go kayaking, and we had a ton of fun exploring the lagoon by the hotel. The water was so clear, we were able to see and identify several fish (trumpet fish, parrot fish, sea cucumber, crabs, etc.). For dinner, we went to the Argentinian restaurant.

Tuesday meant it was time to head back home. We left the resort at 9:30 (even though our flight wasn't until 2:15), and we didn't get back to our house until midnight. Needless to say, we were exhausted! Fortunately, we both took Wednesday off of work so we had time to recover. Kim's parents were nice enough to house and dog sit while we were gone, and they even mowed the lawn for us! Peanut was so spoiled that we're not sure if he noticed we were actually gone.

It was hard to go back to work on Thursday, but it was nice to know we only had a two-day work week. Of course, there was a week of work that had piled up while we were gone...we're both still digging out from that! This weekend, we continued to play catch up at home and enjoyed time with Kim's parents. We went to brunch at the old mill this morning and planted flowers in the garden this afternoon. On his walk tonight, Peanut came nose-to-nose with a deer that had wondered out of the nearby woods. This young buck was certainly not people shy and startled Kim's mom, who didn't notice him walk up. Of course, Peanut was certain he made a new friend.
